Generation-I
Open AccessGeneration-I explores the trend of young voters, particularly those identified as belonging to the “millennial generation,” distancing themselves from the major two-party political institutions (the Democratic Party and the Republican Party). This multimedia project combines photography, a short documentary and a website to ask important questions about how this change came about and how it will affect politics in the future. Through interviews with four millennials of varying political viewpoints the documentary attempts to contrast the differences that exist among members of the millennial generation as well as where they find common ground. An interview with George Washington University Professor of Political Science John Sides, attempts to put these viewpoints into the larger context of American politics.The portraits of each of the millennial subjects attempts to capture them in the environment that has helped shape their views. Connor McGurl (Trump Republican), an ironworker and father is shown with his tools and his son in his father’s garage. Yael Bromberg (Bernie Sanders Democrat) is pictured in front of Georgetown University Law Center where she teaches. Ian O’Kelly (“far left” or “mutualist”), a student at George Washington University who took part in recent DACA protests, is photographed in front of the University’s main quad and Gelman Library. Maxwell Barna (who did not vote in the 2016 election and identifies as an “Anarcho-Libertarian”), a writer and photographer, is photographed behind his home in Philadelphia. With each portrait I’ve attempted to match the palate of the scene with that of the outfit of the subject.
