Pierre-Antoine Bellangé's Seating Furniture For The White House: Its Evolution Within the Interior

The White House has always been, and continues to be, a democratic symbol of American fortitude and independence. Just as the structure's exterior showcases these attributes, the interior echoes them as well in the choice furnishings utilized by the President and visiting dignitaries. Pierre-Antoine Bellangé's custom commissioned seating furniture for the White House in 1817 stands as a testament to the reigning reverence Americans have for history with this particular suite's lifespan of entering the White House in 1817, being sold in 1860 and collected and cherished in private hands, until the majority of the remaining pieces, nearly 150 years later in 1961, returned to grace the very room for which they were intended. The evolution of the American attitude towards material culture value is showcased in this suite of French arm chairs, side chairs, tabourets, foot rests, and settees.
