Interpreting Incoronata: Reconsidering Approaches and Comparing New Areas
Open Access DepositedIncoronata has been at the center of the debate on the nuances of Greek and Indigenous interactions during the colonization of southern Italy in the Early Iron Age. In this thesis I reevaluate traditional interpretations of the numerous pit features at the site which have tended towards binary classifications of “Greek” or “Indigenous.” However, new research is pointing to evidence that some of these pits have ritual functions.Comparing Incoronata to nearby sites allows us to identify similarities in the relationship between ritual and domestic spaces in the area. Viewshed analysis allowed me to better understand settlement interaction and the role of Incoronata as a regional center and a hub for Indigenous-Aegean interaction. Ultimately, this research needs to be grounded in close investigation of each context without assuming separate domestic and ritual spheres and bolstered by further comparative analysis.
