What Stutterers Say about Stuttering: A Qualitative Analysis of the Voices of Stuttering Project

Open Access

Living with stuttering can have significant impacts on a person’s life. We present the results of a phenomenological thematic analysis of The Voices of Stuttering Project, an existing dataset of adults who stutter (AWS). Method: Thirty-three AWS were interviewed about how stuttering has impacted their daily life and how their lives would be different if they did not stutter. We used published thematic analysis procedures (Braun & Clarke, 2006) to identify themes in the respondents’ answers in order to describe stuttering from the point of view of the person who stutters. Results: Thematic analyses revealed 5 themes and 15 subthemes. Although these analyses revealed some positive aspects of living with stuttering, the majority of themes indicate that stuttering negatively impacts several areas of life, including educational, social, and employment settings. Themes also addressed impact over time and how SLPs might aid in reducing negative impact. Discussion: Our findings suggest that the negative psychosocial impact of stuttering is pervasive, and that improving QoL are appropriate targets for therapy.
