Growing Sideways into Queer Futurity: Acceptance, Advocacy, and Accountability of Queer Families in Young Adult Novels from 1980 to 2022
Open AccessThe field of young adult literature is vastly underrepresented and relatively unexplored compared to what we think of as "classic" literature. In this work, the goal is to expand on what has been examined and unearthed and continue that discovery, particularly in the subgenre of queer young adult literature. Using the theoretical lenses provided by Stockton and the late Munoz, the family dynamic of the heterosexual (or heteroflexible) parents/sibling unit and the queer adolescent is examined in an effort to explain the shift from fear and ignorance, to joy and acceptance. In doing so, it is the hope that this work will continue to inspire similar exploration of this field and the depth that can be found in young adult novels.
