Taveau: a Historically Modern Tavern

The role of the tavern has transitioned as America has attempted to redefine itself from a colonial society with a dependence on alcohol to a more controlled, restrained society. Taverns historically served as multifunctional spaces: community center, networking center, civic center, entertainment center and visitors center, complete with food and drink. Through historical documents, case studies, and visiting local establishments, while focusing on Colonial New England, an exploration of the tavern typology will present the social relevance of the historical tavern in a modern setting. This proposal explores how to further redefine the tavern in modern New England, while keeping its historical roles in the community, and modernizing its social component with digital networking tools. This project proposes a modern tavern in Northampton, Massachusetts, where local residents can enjoy gathering as a community.
