Open Access DepositedCo-Designing Abolitionist Curriculum With Youth Activists: A Participatory StudyThis study documents a group of young people as they engage in learning about abolition, activism, and organizing. The youth were tied together through their connection to me, an educator in the same county where they all went to high school. The study was conducted through a series of interviews and online summer sessions, centered around abolition, activism, and organizing. The data was interpreted through a lens of critical literacy and abolitionist theory. Data was coded through a memoing process of thick descriptions that transformed into the writing in the dissertation itself. Data and subsequent analysis were member checked by one participant through conversations and reviewing memos. Findings for this study consisted of the importance of community in learning about abolition, activism, and organizing. The project documents a variety of ways that youth people engage in this learning including learning in community, learning through reading, and learning through trial and error. The study also acts as a guide for educators to use as they begin thinking about their own radical work with youth. Importantly, I also provide an example of self-reflection when working with young people in abolitionist spaces.
