A Study of Gu Zhenguan’s Collection of Ci Poetry, “Snapping Fingers”
Open AccessGu Zhenguan was a famous Ci poet in the early Qing Dynasty. He and other two famous Ci poets, Chen Weisong and Zhu Yizun, together were called as “The Three Excellent Ci Poets” of the early Qing Dynasty. “Snapping Fingers Ci” is the representative work of Gu Zhenguan. The most prominent feature of “Snapping Fingers Ci” is the poet’s deep affection, especially for his best friends and his wife. Gu Zhenguan once presented to Wu Zhaoqian and Nalan Xingde several pieces of “Song of Golden Silk”, which are the classic works in Chinese literature about friendship. In “Snapping Fingers Ci”, many of the works that express the poet’s longing for his wife are due to his long years of wandering and living away from home. From these Ci poems, we can see that Gu Zhenguan had a deep affection for his wife. Besides the content of “Snapping Fingers Ci”, this thesis also discusses the very unique writing style of “Snapping Fingers Ci”. The long tunes of “Snapping Fingers Ci” are usually fully detailed in its narration through the uses of illusion or referring to historical events. The short tunes of “Snapping Fingers Ci” are all very subtle and meaningful. They often leave a lasting impression on the reader due to its expression of endless emotions within a concise form.
