The “Socialmediafication” of Modern Gambling Platforms

Open Access Deposited

This thesis explores the merging of social media based architectures into online gambling platforms, with a focus on how the blending of these platforms affects gambling practices and exacerbates problem gambling behaviors. Using an analysis of the DraftKings sports betting platform, this research identifies the social media based architectures integrated into the gambling platform. Through the use of thick description observation of the DraftKings sportsbook, the study puts forth the concept of “socialmediafication,” specifically, that sports betting platforms have developed similar architectures and strategies native to social media applications to keep players online and playing. The findings suggest socialmediafication increases and retains user engagement, as well as further captures and maintains the attention of users in ways that depart from traditional gambling. The thesis identifies major regulatory gaps shaping the risks surrounding these platforms and has implications for future research involving social media, gambling, and problem gambling.
