An Ancestral State Reconstruction of Sexual Dimorphism in Hominins

Extant and extinct members of the hominid clade can be characterized by varying levels of skeletal and dental sexual dimorphism. Identifying the evolutionary patterns of sexual dimorphism in canine and body size will improve paleoanthropologists' understanding of intraspecific variation and alpha taxonomy. Ancestral state reconstructions, a type of phylogenetic comparative method, provide paleoanthropologists with the ability to reconstruct internal nodes in a given phylogenetic tree. Here, I perform an ancestral state reconstruction for the hominid clade using dental evidence to determine the origins and timing of these traits and their significance for hominin systematics and species recognition in the fossil record.
