Fluid Movement A Performing and Visual Arts Facility for At- Risk Youth
Open AccessMany youth grow up with little to no faith about their future due to factors that surround them such as poverty and violence. What positive opportunities are presented to change the continuous cycle of youth going down the wrong path? “Research has proven that at-risk students who have access to the arts, in or out of school, tend to have better academic results, greater likelihood of college enrollment, increased self-esteem and resiliency, better workforce opportunities, improved emotional intelligence, and more civic engagement, such as voting and volunteering.” Using the arts as a means of self-expression and coping mechanism is a creative way to not only allow individuals to express themselves but develop a sense of belonging in the world. Providing youth with the means to express themselves will contribute to the fight against juvenile delinquency and serious juvenile violence. The goal is to get at risk youth out of troubled environments and allow them to be a part of the design of the environments they will use. Design interventions allow users to grow, develop and learn different types of cultures and worldly experiences. Being exposed to different cultures and experiences helps with preparation for adulthood and reduce neighborhood crime. All forms of art serve as a representation of self-expression and development. Art is universal, influenced by culture. Given the means to explore creative urges in a positive environment will encourage change.
