Ma Dexin's Philosophy of Virtue

Ma Dexin (1794-1874) is one of the famous scholars in the Chinese Islamic School. In his thought, he harmonized Islamic tradition with Chinese mainstream culture, especially Neo-Confucianism, to provide an academic foundation for cultural dialogue. Thus, he drew upon "virtue", one of the key themes in Confucianism, to explore its ontological origin and formed a Confucian-Islamic cosmological system. He also studied Islamic practice and connected it with Confucian "action". At last, he introduced the afterworld to supplement Confucian virtue system. His philosophy of virtue increased mutual understanding between Chinese Muslims and Chinese Confucian intellectuals.
