My Little Brony Project: Tolerance is Magic
Open AccessThis multimedia journalism project is about Bronies, adult fans of the animated children's television program "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" (MLP:FiM for short). The project explores the culture of the fandom as one of support, caring and acceptance that fans have found thanks to a show not originally aimed at their demographic. It also explores the general public's reaction to the fandom, which ranges from benign skepticism to revulsion and hatred. Social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr, generate an ongoing conversation with the Brony fan base. The first conversation addresses the fandom's worst misconceptions (#BronyMisconceptions). The second asks fans about finding love as a Brony and engaging in cosplay --wearing fandom-related costumes (#CosLove). The narrative delves into societal expectations, gender bias, intolerance and self-identification.
