The Dollar and Bretton Woods: Search for an International Currency
Open AccessThis paper examines the selection of the United States dollar as the primary currency in the Bretton Woods system and earlier attempts to create a international currency. After attempts to make John Maynard Keynes' bancor and Harry Dexter White's unitas acceptable to the British and American governments failed, the British delegation proposed using the dollar. To avoid complications the phrase gold-convertible currency was used in place of dollars until the Atlantic City and Bretton Woods Conferences when it was replaced with dollars.
