Finding Refuge: Examining community-based design and development for an exhibition intended to offer hope for refugees and build empathy for immigrants

This paper uses an exhibition proposal entitled “Finding Refuge” to provide a framework for designing and developing an exhibition experience that portrays a specific culture; delivers a message of hope to those members of the culture; and establishes a connection between the culture featured and members of a different cultural background. The research, exhibition proposal, and exhibit design will work together to form a complete experience that accomplishes this idea of featuring one ethnicity in-order to provide a stronger sense of identity and to facilitate positive interactions between several different communities. Specifically, this project is looking at ways to design a museum exhibit featuring Syrian artifacts (to preserve them) in a way that facilitates dialogue between Syrian refugees and the countries where the refugees have found new homes. To focus on community-based development and design, the crux of this project relies on understanding a Syrian perspective to make sure the exhibit speaks to a Syrian audience.
