The Role of the Principal in Promoting Positive Teacher-Student Relationships as a Component of a Positive School Climate
Open AccessThe purpose of this study was to determine the role of the elementary principal in promoting positive teacher-student relationships as a component of a positive school climate. This study focused on the connection between positive teacher-student relationships, psychological safety, school climate, student outcomes, and the ability of building principals to positively influence these components through their actions. A basic interpretive qualitative approach was utilized, and data were collected from 13 elementary school principals using structured interview questions. The results of the study suggest that the primary role of the principal in promoting positive teacher-student relationships is to provide teachers with global support to improve their skills in forming relationships with students, enact policies to ensure the use of positive contacts between school and home, and establish expectations around teachers engaging in a morning meeting daily routine with their students. Although the results of this study align with extant literature surrounding the importance of positive teacher-student relationships and the role of the principal in creating a positive school climate, teachers and principals require more training to adequately support students’ social and emotional needs.
