Snatching Victory: LGBTQ Activism in the Arab World

Open Access Deposited

This dissertation offers an account of the emergence of LGBTQ social movements in the Arab world by focusing on three distinct questions. First, how does the political and social environment condition the evolution of LGBTQ movements? Second, why do LGBTQ movements in the region take on radically different framing approaches in combating homophobic repression? Third, what accounts for the varying ways in which LGBTQ movements contest anti-LGBTQ laws despite facing similar institutional environments?
