Noncompliant

Noncompliant is a multimedia video documentary project about force and coercion in the United States mental health system. The project tells the story of Emily Cutler, age 24, who after being committed to a mental hospital against her will when she was a college senior, reclaimed her life on her own terms. Noncompliant is a term used in medicine to refer to patients who refuse to take their medication as prescribed or follow a doctor’s course of treatment. After being released from the hospital, Cutler discovered the writings of Judi Chamberlin, an ex-mental patient who helped start the mental disability rights movement in the U.S. in the 1970's. Cutler is now finding her voice in the next generation of this movement in which individuals demand freedom and self-determination and an end to coercive practices.
