Addressing the Mental Health of Virginia Children: How Community Service Boards and Local School Divisions Collaborate to Serve Students with Mental Health Needs

Open Access

More than 22% of youth in the United States will receive a mental health diagnosis before their 18th birthday (Beers & Joshi, 2020). In a world of public health emergencies and disasters, mental health services for youth are paramount to emergency preparedness, resilience and response, and mitigation of harmful effects (Danese et al., 2020). There is a lack of qualitative research on the effectiveness that collaboration and communication have in intervening in children’s mental health. The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the systems in place by which local community service boards collaborate with local school divisions, specifically on arrangements between the two agencies related to prevention, evaluation, intervention, and treatment of K-12 students.
