Development of an Architecture Framework for the Inclusion of Human Factors in System Design
Open AccessPlanning for the interaction of humans with systems is increasingly challenging as more complex systems are designed. Other fields have developed techniques, such as Human-Centered Design and Human Factors Engineering, to help address these challenges. This research examines how techniques from Human-Centered Design and Human Factors Engineering can be integrated with Model-Based Systems Engineering into a Human-Systems Integration Architecture Framework. This framework can be used to supplement existing architecture frameworks commonly used within Systems Engineering. The research discussed here focuses first on integrating Human-Centered Design and Human Factors Engineering with Model-Based Systems Engineering and then on identifying useful viewpoints and aspects and formulating those within an architecture framework, the Human-Systems Integration Architecture Framework. The Human-Systems Integration Architecture Framework is demonstrated on an example system, Watchful Phantom, a system that integrates a remotely piloted (unmanned), aerial surveillance vehicle with a ground-based analyst and a ground-based interdiction team. Watchful Phantom has been chosen as the example system based off similar systems used to explore Human-Systems Integration within the literature. The Human-Systems Integration Architecture Framework and the associated views and viewpoints are described and explored in the context of Watchful Phantom.
