Intergenerational Art-Making for Social Justice

This action-research study explored the questions, "Would the mutual process of creating art in an intergenerational setting provide a transformation of perspective in regards to social issues and perception of age for both older adults and high school students, in addition to other benefits?" and "Can a more time-intensive service project with personal contact, in which participants engage in art-making and teaching art, provide high school students with a deeper understanding of the Catholic Church's teachings on Social Justice?" The author developed and instituted a program wherein high school students from a Catholic high school participated in intergenerational community service learning art-making sessions with older adults at a local residential home. The results of this qualitative study are recorded in this thesis, and document students' and residents' reactions, responses and opinions about their experiences. Both questions were answered in the affirmative. Findings from this study should further investigation into intergenerational art-making community service programs.
