Intersections of Culture and Religion in Peacebuilding: An Analysis of Post-2003 Iraq and US Liberal Approaches

Open Access Deposited

Following the war in Iraq in 2003, Iraq underwent a profound transformation marked by a series of complex peacebuilding initiatives. This thesis undertakes an analysis of the multifaceted peacebuilding processes in post-2003 Iraq, with a specific focus on the cultural and religious dimensions, particularly within the framework of Islam. Central to this thesis is the examination of the interplay between indigenous cultural and religious dynamics and the Liberal peacebuilding strategies implemented by the United States. A pivotal aspect of this dynamic is the role of mosques, which serve as significant cultural and religious hubs in Iraqi society. The influence of mosques extends beyond spiritual guidance; they also act as community centers and platforms for social and political mobilization. Through a comprehensive exploration, this study delineates both the convergences and divergences among these dimensions and the external interventions influenced by Western paradigms. Furthermore, it examines the importance of these aspects for the enduring peace and stability of the country. The overarching aim of this research is to enhance comprehension regarding the complexities inherent when diverse cultural and religious facets intersect with international endeavors aimed at attaining peace. It offers valuable observations that can inform the creation of more effective and contextually suitable approaches for rebuilding after conflicts and strengthening peace.
