syn|the|sis

This thesis project establishes that textiles are an important means of communication and an expression of individual and group identity. The study of two typologies form the backbone of the project, African kitenge cloth and Maija Isola's patterns for Marimekko. This proposal identifies specific compositional elements of kitenge and Marimekko fabric patterns that it combines with a new subject matter, Iris Apfel, to create the forms and patterns for a new line of textiles to be physically produced during the Spring of 2011. To launch this line into the market as a potential business, the project has also formed a corporate identity and business plan for the textile line which act as the site from which the synthesis of all other elements occur.
