Scenic Design for A Little Night Music

Open Access

Color palette, pattern, opulence, and romanticism in the decorative and interior artsexpressed the exotic sensuality of the Victorian zeitgeist. For the scenic design ofSondheim’s A Little Night Music, the great challenge was to invoke the lavish spirit of the piece (a late-Victorian comedic sexcapade) within the severity of a limited budget. By fusing visually elaborate excess with minimalist design, the stage was set for thiscapricious period musical. A Little Night Music, directed by professor Leslie Jacobsonwith music direction by Patrick O’Donnell, was produced by The George WashingtonUniversity at the Dorothy Marvin Betts Theatre in Washington, D.C., opening March31tst, 2016 and closing on April 3, 2016. Other graduate student designers includedJameson Gresens (lighting), and Sydney Moore (costume). Kait Haire was propertiesmaster, and the production was stage managed by Katy Fields.
