Children of Incarcerated Parents: How Coping Impacts Resiliency
Open AccessChildren of incarcerated parents experience a myriad of collateral consequences of parents’ incarceration. This includes risks of poverty, changes in caregiver, move to a different school, and many more. This leaves the child with added life stressors they need to learn how to handle. Handling stress involves employing coping mechanisms to combat these stressful life events. Previous research discusses children of incarcerated parents in terms of a deficit model. This study intends to do the opposite and emphasize the resiliency that children of incarcerated parents have. This will be done through the exploration of four categories of coping mechanisms and analyzed through the qualitative method of interviews.
