Technoeconomic Assessment of Brackish Water Electrochemical Desalination with Intercalation Electrodes

As many parts of the world face the shortage of freshwater resources, desalination plays a crucial role in generating freshwater from unconventional water sources including seawater and brackish water. Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a desalination technology that involves electrically-driven ion storage in electrodes for salt removal and ion discharge for electrode regeneration. Intercalation-electrodes have been developed to provide a higher SAC for improving desalination performance compared with carbon-electrode CDI systems. This thesis conducted a technoeconomic analysis for three intercalation-electrode electrochemical desalination systems.
