Culture Collective: A Place for Multicultural Interaction, Exchange, Discovery and Understanding
Open AccessIn recent history we have seen huge shifts in demographics throughout the United States, the level of cultural diversity within many communities have increased significantly mostly due to the continued immigration of people from all over the world to America. In fact, we have already reached a point where most of our population growth is being driven by minority groups. This is not just a demographic statistic, it is an emerging reality that is already having a huge impact to American culture. Given this reality, as a society we must ask, how are we helping individuals and communities have positive interactions that brings them together to get to know each other? The truth is we lack multicultural understanding and have a huge need to identify innovative ways in which we can bring the groups make up our communities to interact.To address this issue, this thesis will explore the existing gaps between places for cultural showcase and those that actually provide opportunities for significant cultural exchanges between groups of different backgrounds. In doing so, it will propose the design of a space that utilizes key cultural elements such as arts and crafts, food, music and literature as gateways to bring significant interactions and conversations about our multicultural reality. The “Culture Collective” will serve as a place for multicultural exchange, discovery, participation and ultimately understanding.
