The Convergence of Equity and California Career Academies for District Administrators
Open Access Depositedthey spent time focused on compliance, managing several grants and the quality of pathways, navigating interpersonal situations, and felt disempowered to create equity-based change. Participants used relational leadership strategies to overcome their sense of disempowerment.
This study sought to understand California district administrators' experiences planning for career academies and addressing equity. Career academies date back to the 1960s in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. However, California was the first state to legislate a policy that provided state funding and a framework for career academies. I conducted interviews with participants from various regions of the state, representing both large and small districts, to understand their experiences.
