The Encounter of Islam and Chinese Civilization: From Conflict to Complementarity

What does it mean to be a Chinese Muslim scholar? After being immersed in Chinese classics, how does a Chinese Muslim view his religion and does he, try to create a dialogue between Islamic and Chinese intellectual tradition? This study attempts to answer these questions. It does so by further examining the "Chinese Muslim literatus" class that Zvi Ben-Dor Benite discussed in his book The Dao of Muhammad. This study looks at their impact on the society as a social class.
