Washington, D.C.: The Music District

Washington, D.C.’s music heritage is deeply embedded into the soul of this city. It is the original home and namesake of the Columbia Phonograph Company, which is now Columbia Records, as well as a historic epicenter for bluegrass, jazz, Go-Go, hardcore punk, folklore studies and political protest. The influence reaches to the core of the music industry and its stories are momentous, yet D.C., in its semi-transient state, seems disconnected from its rich musical past. In order to remediate this condition Washington, D.C.: The Music District is a district wide initiative focused on commemorating D.C.’s music heritage through modernized historical markers located at culturally significant locations throughout the city.
