The Role of Exemplar Typicality in the Semantic Feature Analysis Treatment of Anomia and Implications for Group Aphasia Therapy

Open Access

This paper examines the influence of semantic complexity (typicality) when applied to group-based Semantic Feature Analysis treatment for anomia. Specifically it investigates whether training atypical exemplars using a traditional SFA model implemented in a group setting yielded greater generalization to untrained exemplars than training using typical exemplars. This study builds on the findings of previous studies, which have demonstrated that SFA can be successfully implemented in a group setting and that, in congruence with the principals of the Complexity Account of Treatment Efficacy, generalization of naming tasks is most likely to occur when people with aphasia are trained on atypical stimuli.
