The Influence of Environmental Factors on Egocentric Distance Judgments

Distance perception research has largely focused on the cue factors to the target itself and only recently has begun investigating influences of the surrounding environment on egocentric distance judgments. This research is worthwhile but difficult to consolidate, as real-world environments are challenging to manipulate in reliable ways. Thus, this dissertation employed the use of computer-rendered scenes to investigate the impact of different environmental manipulations on egocentric distance judgments. Six experiments found a robust and reliable effect of room width on egocentric distance judgments, with narrow rooms eliciting shorter distance judgments than wide rooms. Further examination into the cue basis for this effect highlighted the importance of objects and scene boundaries in proximity to the target more so than linear perspective, simple boundaries, and objects in the far proximity of the environment as contributing to the room width effect. Overall, this suggests a mechanism for distance perception that interacts with object information present in the scene as well as scene size and boundary information separate from the primary distance cues available to the target.
