A Sensory Connection to Memory a Look at the Care of Neurodegenerative Conditions Open Access
The project will be a center for those who have been diagnosed with a degenerative condition; such as ALS, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s. These conditions lead bit the patient and the caretaker on a treatment journey that continues through the remainder of the patient’s life. The scope will include facilities for research, patient care and support, and caretaker relief. The facility will cater to the needs of both the family and the patient. There will be moments of rest and reprieve throughout the programming to help ease the journey of treatment and function as connections to the other portions of the project. The center will create a sensory connectivity to memory throughout the space. This will revolve around the use of light and tactility in the built environment. These elements will connect the various spaces in the facility. The focus on these elements will be around the patients and what the best environment is for their care. There will also be a focus on creating a supportive environment for care takers and staff. This project will attempt to show how to decrease the stress level of the patient and create a more supportive environment. With current hospital campus set ups it is often a more stressful environment and connection between the departments break down. By combining all these areas into one main building there can be greater connection and greater care for the end user. Though connections in the built environment as well as connection to memory the project will use light as the narrative to create an environment that will be conducive to these connections for the end user. The purpose of this project is to create a central treatment facility to further the design needs of this patient and family population. The overall design of the facility will cater to the individual needs of the end user and is more empathetic to the treatment journey that they will be experiencing. By bringing together these conditions and treatment we can hope to further the quality of life for those that have to live with the diagnosis day to day.
