Sugaring: Understanding the World of Sugar Daddies and Sugar Babies in the United States

Open Access

A sugar arrangement is a mutually beneficial relationship that provides sugar babies with financial support and mentorship in exchange for dating and companionship with sugar daddies. It is a new and growing practice, reflective of the hookup culture, and offers uncommitted sex and emotional intimacy. Since sugar dating is perceived to be drama-free, casual, and mutually beneficial, it is viewed as different from conventional romantic relationships. The aim of this study was to explore the sugar culture: the reasons individuals are attracted to it and the benefits sugaring provides for them. This study analyzes sugar baby (N = 90) and sugar daddy (N = 108) profiles from SeekingArrangement.com in conjunction with the discussion forums and responses on LetsTalkSugar.com. Sugaring provides a discrete, short- or long-term arrangement for individuals who attempt to avoid the stigma associated with commercial sex workers. Both the sugar babies and sugar daddies in the study describe techniques they employ to distance themselves from being associated with sex workers.
