Con[Sensual] A New Master Plan and Brand for The Museum of Sex
Open AccessCon[Sensual] is both an exhibition and new Master Plan for the New York Museum of Sex. The goal is to define and advocate the importance and necessity of consent, sexual education, ethics, and reduction of sexual stigma though the means of sparking interactive interpersonal communication, empathy, self-understanding in addition to creating feelings of liberation and pride. Con[Sensual] aims to both broaden the audience base with applied focus on widespread human needs such as autonomy, respect, and connection, while also catering to specialized groups by providing advocacy and representation. In doing so, the museum will gain greater legitimacy through public and political support all while still maintaining its autonomy as a private institution.Core curatorial content categories include the defining principles of consent, rape, communication, sexual ethics, as well as core exploratory content on partnership, pleasure, intimacy, interpersonal connection and self-acceptance. A case study on a sexual subculture, BDSM, will explore non-mainstream methods of understanding and experiencing core concepts. Exhibition areas that display specific populations, IE survivors of assault, will display materials with accuracy, acceptance, and the inclusion of group member voices. Con[Sensual] primarily focuses on how sex is communicated, utilized, and performed rather than on gender or sexual orientation. The museum will have an unwavering and integrated stance and on the equality of gender identity and sexual orientation in such a way that all materials and voices throughout the spaces will be inclusively representative of these natural variations.
