Creating an Obsolescence Management Systems Framework to Improve Enterprise Performance

Open Access

With military and commercial systems becoming more complex, using more sophisticated components, and having a longer system life cycle, it is essential that enterprises have a systematic approach to managing these systems. A longer system life cycle has led to a big concern regarding component obsolescence issues. Obsolescence is a concern for both commercial and military systems. Obsolescence is the loss or imminent loss of manufactures, components (hardware: electrical/mechanical; software: programs/operating systems), services, and practices. This research study addresses and examines the foundational attributes of an Obsolescence Management System framework. First, the research study identifies and prioritizes the problem areas in project management and systems engineering that Obsolescence Management System can help mitigate in an enterprise. Second, the research study identifies and prioritizes the requirements for developing an Obsolescence Management System in an enterprise. Third, the research study identifies and prioritizes the expected benefits of implementing an Obsolescence Management System in an enterprise. Finally, the research study performs a group comparison analysis to determine if there are significant differences between groups; there were only five significant differences identified out of eighty comparisons. This research study validated the foundational attributes of an Obsolescence Management System framework, which will support decision makers in creating an Obsolescence Management System Architecture to improve enterprise performance.
