THE PORCH: Southern Design from a Modern Perspective
Open AccessThe mention of modern design and the aesthetics ofthe Deep South do not often occur in the same sentence. States such as Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and the Carolinas boast a deep-rooted culture, founded on traditions dating back to the Antebellum Era... and their architectural and design style is no different. The necessity to modernize the Southern aesthetic is multi dimensional: saving the environment with more emphasis on sustainability, reasserting this rich culture as a taste-maker and inspiration source for designers worldwide, and discovering a strategy that makes Southerners proud not only of where they are from, but also where they will go. By applying theory and principles important to other cultures during their own stylistic reinventions, Southern design can evolve its concepts, objectives, materials, and process. Such a recipe for change would be best documented through multiple mediums accessible to all Southerners (designers and non-designers alike) via the worldwide web. An interactive website including information, illustrations, and interviews will provide the necessary tools needed to bring the design aesthetic of the American South into the twenty-first century while giving credit to itshistorical provenance.
