Super Zero: A Neighborhood Game About Reducing Waste
Open AccessSuper Zero is a community game in a box that focuses on reducing waste at home. Neighbors are encouraged to come together to be heroes that make a meaningful environmental impact. Super Zero focusses on small efforts that come together to make a big difference towards reversing the global climate crisis. This is a family focused event that uses a variety of games to not only bring people together but to also focus on moving to being a zero-waste household and living a more sustainable lifestyle. When arriving at a Super Zero event, children explore a house made entirely out of cardboard, learning something different in each room. Utilizing public space, a floorplan and 3-dimentional cardboard furniture encourages neighbors to work together to visualize how this outdoor experience ties directly to their waste habits at home. Children will interact with mini games and activities integrated into the 3-dimential cardboard floorplan, including recycling basketball, DIY compost bin crafting, and food matching games. These games will touch on the topics of recycling contamination, single-use plastics, and how our waste and disposal practices affect wildlife such as sea turtles and albatross (Parker, 2015). By participating in these activities, children are encouraged to become the Super Zero of their own home. A Super Zero promotes wasting less to divert items from the landfill. Super Zero has games that have been personalized to the needs of Maryland residents as a case study for its implementation.
