"MY ART'S NOT BUILT LIKE THAT:" A FEMINIST ANALYSIS OF THE MICHIGAN WOMYNS MUSIC FESTIVAL

The objective of this paper is to understand the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival (MWMF) through a transnational lens. Sasskia Sassen's arguments regarding transnational discourse provided a theoretical framework to explore the relationship between music and politics in popular culture. Topics discussed include subnational networks, citizenship, and the role of electronic media in creating transnational networks and communities at the MWMF. Two research methodologies are utilized to explore the relationship between music and politics within the context of the MWMF; a questionnaire and content analysis. The research concludes that music and spoken word performed at the MWMF address issues of race, class, gender and sexuality and that the culture of the MWMF is transnational in nature.
