High Tech Harassment: Policy Problems and Solutions for Ending Teen Girl Cyberbullying

As the Internet quickly permeated youth subculture in America, a scary trend began. Cyberbullying, or online harassment, has become an increasing and alarming threat among young people, especially girls. With high-profile cases of cyberbullying resulting in suicide, policymakers are beginning to take notice of this growing crisis. This paper analyzes the ways in which online harassment is perpetrated by and against "tween" and teen girls, the most common participants in relational aggression and cyberbullying. Additionally, it will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of existing policy that has been used to address cyberbullying, as well as what federal policy could do to curb online harassment, without violating the U.S. Constitution. Solutions can be developed to prevent cyberbullying, but they will have to carefully navigate significant areas of existing federal policy.
