Application of Binary Integer Programming to Align Healthcare Facility Capital Renewal Models to Business Objectives

This research explored decision modeling for facilities infrastructure projects in a hospital setting. Specifically, this research studied how to improve existing project selection through an integration of the financial goals of the hospital, the physical condition of hospital spaces, and patient risk. The lack of an integrated project selection model has led to a $243 billion underinvestment in facilities infrastructure. This underinvestment, or deferred maintenance, can compromise patient care by rendering physical space unusable. Also, if fewer patients can be treated due to unusable space, less money is available for facility infrastructure investments, which increases the deferred maintenance backlog. Statistical analysis was used to determine relevant project selection criteria and produce a decision model that produced more revenue and less patient risk than existing project selection methods. This study builds on previous research and represents a next step toward a system mindset that healthcare facility managers can use to bring immediate value to the healthcare management field.
