Parent-Child Sexual Communication and Children’s Pornography Consumption among Chinese/Americans in the US

This study used survey research to examine the relationships among mother-child sexual communication (MCSC), father-child sexual communication (FCSC), the quality of parent-child sexual communication (PCSC), parent-child internet communication (PCIC), children’s pornography consumption, children’s consumption of pornography containing risky sexual behaviors (CRB), and children’s perceived benefits from pornography (PBP) and perceived problematic pornography use (PPU) in Chinese/Americans in the US. The parental mediation theory was tested but did not explain the results directly. MCSC and FCSC were found to be positively associated with PPU. FCSC was found to be positively associated with CRB. PCIC was found to be positively associated with pornography consumption, CRB, PBP, and PPU. Due to the uniqueness of the study results, discussions and implications were made for both future research and practical interventions to include Chinese/Americans and examine PCSC, PCIC, pornography, and sexual health via holistic approaches.
