Essays on the American Middle Class in Metropolitan Areas: Definitions, Size, Characteristics, and Impact on Economic Growth

Who is part of the American middle class, how large is it, and does it vary across regions? The economic definition of the middle class often varies depending on researchers (or practitioners), which makes it hard to discuss the “middle class,” let alone measure important economic trends, such as whether its size has been declining or increasing. The three essays are designed to build on each other and thus describe the share of the middle-income class across all U.S. metropolitan areas, the correlates of this measure, and the potential impact of the middle class – both their population share and their income share – on the regional economy.
