ABSTRACT OF THESIS“You are a prisoner of your own mind.” -UnknownTHE FACES OF PTSD is an exhibition proposal aiming to change the discussion about mental illness. This exhibition is intended to create a sense of empathy for mental illness and to bridge a gap in understanding between those with PTSD, and those without. It will explore alternative therapy methods and how they can be used as a coping mechanism for trauma. Designed to travel to multiple sites, the exhibition’s journey begins in downtown Washington, DC. Located at The Walter E. Washington Convention Center, the proposed exhibit will serve as a backdrop to mental health conferences and military events. This site is central to the District of Columbia and prominent enough to draw large visitor numbers, for a variety of venues and events. This document will outline research methodologies, audience and community engagement and site-specific interpretation all centered on creating and exhibition to reduce the stigma of trauma-related mental illness.
