Comenzando Bien: The Production of Authoritative Knowledge in Prenatal Education and Disparities Between Mexican Immigrant and Non-immigrant Populations in the United States

This paper examines the intersection of culture, poverty, and healthcare in the production of authoritative knowledge during prenatal education and the effect that disparities in this education can have on knowledge production. The research focuses on the Central American immigrant population of Annapolis, MD and non-immigrant populations in the area. Analysis is based on a brief literature review of authoritative knowledge in childbirth in the U.S. and Central America, but mainly on primary data collected through participant observation in childbirth education classes in Annapolis, MD, and interviews with non-immigrant women as well as Central American immigrant women.
