Victory from Defeat: Reassessing the Iran-Iraq War
Open Access DepositedThe Iran-Iraq War, spanning 1980 to 1988, stands as one of the most devastating conflicts of the 20th century, marked by significant loss of life, economic strain, and geopolitical reverberations. The prevailing narrative of the war is one of prolonged and brutal stalemate between two fundamentally antagonistic, evil, and inept governments. The leaders of both Iran and Iraq have for decades been depicted as nearly cartoon villains for their callous treatment of their own people, for their inability to make full use of modern arsenals, and for extending the war for years without a clear plan for how to end it. A more nuanced analysis challenges this perspective, revealing that beneath the surface of relentless warfare, both Iran and Iraq managed to secure pivotal objectives that reshaped regional dynamics and solidified their respective positions.
