In this thesis, I outline a methodology by which feminist exegesis of the Qur'an may be incorporated into mainstream Islamic scholarship in the West. Specifically, I argue that if feminist tafsir is to shift from its current marginalized status within Islamic intellectual thought, it must engage thoroughly with hadith literature as well as classical primary sources that will facilitate a gender-inclusive and egalitarian religious anthropology rooted in tradition. Furthermore, direct involvement with living Muslim communities including women's networks and grassroots organizations, particularly those committed to the promotion of the female voice in traditional scholarship, are necessary to establish legitimacy.
