Your Way Back To Me

This thesis consists of the documentary film Your Way Back to Me, photographs, a sculptural installation, and a website to promote screenings of the film. The subject is Hannah Sheridan and her family as they mourn the deaths of Hannah’s father and grandmother. The film follows Hannah as she leaves her home in Washington, D.C., to first visit an exhibit of her father’s ledger art at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in New York City, and then embarks on a journey to return to her Native-American community in Carnegie and El Reno, Oklahoma to fulfill her role in the mourning rituals that honor her deceased relatives and to try to find her place again within her culture and family. The film examines the roles of Hannah’s intersecting identities as a lesbian, or two-spirit woman and veteran within the context of her tribal cultures, while offering a new perspective on what it means to be Native American today.
