The Metropolitan Museum of the Sublime

Open Access

This thesis proposes the adaptive reuse of an abandoned underground railway station into a mixed-use project encompassing an experiential neighborhood destination space, community museum, and retail opportunity for local merchants and shop owners. Entitled The Metropolitan Museum of the Sublime, this subterranean cultural center is situated beneath the Dupont Circle in Washington DC, at the head of a key urban axis route. By utilizing the existing infrastructure, The Metropolitan Museum of the Sublime will connect two historically important urban environments, one above ground and one below, thus becoming an important cultural link that enhances the creative community environment within Washington, DC.
