Integration and Functional Evaluation of Text-mining and Manually Curated Data on Glycans and Proteins
Open AccessBioinformatics has played a pivotal role in promoting the research on genetics and protein science. In comparison, glycoscience and glycobiology has only gained widespread attention in recent decades. Key role of glycosylation in various biological processes and its inherent relationship with a variety of diseases have been discovered. The development of glycomics and glycoproteomics technology has produced a large amount of data and shows the significance of glycosylation in disease prediction and treatment. It becomes more and more necessary to systematically integrate the sugar-related knowledge that has been obtained. Many research databases and free tools have emerged and constantly expanded. However, many databases or tools are difficult to find or use due to insufficient guidance and advertisement. This review highlights different aspects of glycobiology with analysis of recent progress in the study of biological role of glycans and provides an overview on bioinformatic resources of glycobiology by manually curating in order to promote application of glycobiology and glycobioinformatics resources.
